The story, before the build.

Mood & Material Concept — Vision Board

A Mood & Material Concept is a standalone consulting engagement from Joshua Lux Innenarchitektur. You receive a documented vision board — color, material, lighting and furniture direction for your space — without committing to a full renovation or HOAI commission. The deliverable is yours to use: hand it to your own architect, your builder, or implement it yourself with local trades.

A documented concept, not a construction contract

Most interior design engagements in Germany follow the HOAI fee structure — a multi-phase commission that runs from concept through site supervision. That model fits a full renovation, but it does not fit every client. Some clients want clarity before they commit. Some live abroad and will execute the work locally. Some have a builder or architect already, and only need a coherent design direction to brief them. The Mood & Material Concept exists for these situations.

It is a four- to six-week consulting engagement that ends with a documented vision board: a printed and digital concept for one space, or a coherent set of spaces, including color palette, material direction, lighting logic, furniture references and sourcing notes. Pricing is on a day-rate or package basis — not HOAI. There is no obligation to commission us for execution afterwards. If you choose to, the concept work credits against a later Apartment Design, Altbau Renovation or Luxury Living engagement.

Who this service is for

Expats refreshing an apartment in Germany. You want a German-quality concept for a space you may rent or own, executed through your own trades. The vision board gives you a documented direction without the overhead of a full commission.

International clients executing locally. You want the discipline of a German interior architect — context, narrative, structure — applied to a project in New York, London, Zurich or elsewhere. We work remotely, ship material samples internationally and hand over a deliverable your local team can implement.

HNW clients before committing. You want a discreet concept session before deciding on a full renovation. The Mood & Material Concept is the format for that decision: a real piece of work, on paper, that tells you what the project could become.

Couples or solo clients pre-purchase. You are evaluating an apartment or house and want to know what it could become before you sign. We assess the existing condition, sketch a direction and document the case for or against. For a historic villa, this often precedes a full Villa Renovation.

What you receive

A documented mood board, printed and digital, organized by room or by theme. A material samples reference — fabric, stone, wood, metal, paint chips — physically compiled, with international shipping available. A color palette with concrete brand and finish references, so a painter or supplier anywhere can match it. Furniture and lighting direction with sourcing suggestions. A written narrative that explains the concept and connects each decision back to context. Optional: 2D space-planning sketches where layout is part of the question.

The work follows our method: context, narrative, structure. We start with the building, the city, the life that will happen in the space. We identify the connections that make this particular project meaningful — origin, use, light, the people who will live there. And we translate that into a structure of color, material and form that another professional can build from.

What this service is not

It is not an HOAI commission. It is not site supervision. It is not a documentation of execution quality — implementation rests with you or your trades. The vision board is the deliverable; what happens on site afterwards is not part of this engagement. If you want a full execution with site supervision in the Rhein-Main region, that is a separate Consulting or HOAI commission, and we are happy to discuss it.

How the engagement runs

Four to six weeks from kickoff to handover, with one site visit (in person where feasible, otherwise via video) and one workshop or feedback round. Day-rate or package pricing, agreed before we begin. A single point of contact throughout. The handover is a physical and digital package — vision board, samples, written narrative, sourcing references — built to be readable by a third party.

Our approach

Storytelling as method — three pillars at the foundation of every design.

–01

Context

The foundation. Every project begins with the question of "why." Why is this space the way it is? What is its origin? This deeper understanding shapes everything that follows.

–02

Narrative

The core of the story. The connections between client and user, place and space, origin and material. This is what makes a space alive and meaningful.

–03

Structure

The translation into form. Contrast, rhythm, haptics, light and shadow — elements that compose into a coherent whole, making the context tangible to anyone who enters.

Our services

Initial Consultation

A focused first conversation about the space, the people who use it and the question behind the project. We define scope, format and deliverable, and agree on day-rate or package pricing before any work begins.

Concept Development

The core of the engagement. We develop the design narrative — what the space wants to be, how it connects to its context, which direction the materials should follow. The output is a working hypothesis, ready for the first review.

Material & Color Research

Sourcing and compilation of materials, fabrics, finishes and lighting references. Physical samples where possible, with concrete brand and product references so the concept can be reproduced by any qualified trade, in Germany or abroad.

Documented Deliverable

The final handover: a printed and digital vision board, sample compilation, color palette with finish references, furniture and lighting direction, written narrative. Built to be read and implemented by a third party.

From first conversation to finished space

  1. 00

    First Conversation

Initial call to understand the project, the space and the format you need. We clarify scope, timeline and pricing — day-rate or package — and confirm whether a Mood & Material Concept is the right engagement. Result: a clear written proposal.

  2. 01

    Discovery

Site visit, in person where feasible or via video for remote clients. Context analysis: building, location, light, existing conditions. Conversations with the people who will use the space. Result: a documented brief with goals, constraints and the questions the concept needs to answer.

  3. 02

    Vision Development

First material direction, color palette and mood narrative. Initial sourcing of finishes, fabrics and lighting references. A working hypothesis you can react to — not a finished deliverable, but a real position to discuss.

  4. 03

    Refinement

A workshop or structured feedback round. Your response shapes the second iteration. We sharpen the narrative, swap materials where needed and confirm the direction before final documentation.

  5. 04

    Documentation

Final vision board, sample compilation, written narrative, sourcing references and color palette with concrete finish specifications. Printed and digital formats, organized so a third party can read and implement them.

  6. 05

    Handover

Physical and digital package delivered to you. Optional follow-up call to walk through implementation with you, your architect or your builder. If you later commission us for full execution, this work credits against that engagement.

Frequently asked questions

How does this differ from a full interior design commission?

A full commission in Germany typically follows HOAI — concept, planning, tender, site supervision. The Mood & Material Concept stops at the documented concept. You receive a vision board, material direction and sourcing references; implementation rests with you, your architect or your builder. Pricing is day-rate or package, not HOAI.

What does a vision board package cost?

Pricing depends on scope — one room, an apartment, or a coherent set of spaces — and on whether the engagement is in person or remote. We work on day-rate or package basis and confirm the figure in writing before we begin. We do not start work without an agreed price.

How long does it take?

Four to six weeks from kickoff to handover is typical, with one site visit and one workshop or feedback round. Faster turnarounds are possible for single rooms; larger or multi-space concepts can run eight to ten weeks.

Can you work remotely, for clients outside Germany?

Yes. Site visits can be conducted via video for international clients, with detailed photo and measurement briefs prepared in advance. The workshop or feedback round runs via video as well. The final deliverable is shipped — vision board, samples, written documentation — to wherever you are.

Do you ship material samples internationally?

Yes. The sample compilation is a physical package — fabric swatches, stone tiles, wood veneers, paint chips, metal finishes — built for shipping. We have shipped samples across Europe and to the US. Shipping is billed at cost.

Can I implement the vision myself with local trades?

Yes — that is the point of the format. The deliverable is built to be read by a qualified third party. Color palettes carry concrete brand and finish references. Materials are documented with supplier names. A painter, joiner or contractor anywhere can work from the package. What we do not provide as part of this engagement is site supervision or documentation of execution quality; that is on you and your trades.

What if I want to commission you for full execution later?

The concept work credits against a later commission. If you decide to bring us in for Apartment Design, Altbau Renovation or Luxury Living execution in the Rhein-Main region, the fee paid for the Mood & Material Concept is deducted from the new engagement. Outside our region, we can recommend a route — your local architect, a generalist contractor, or remote design support from our studio.

Tell us about your project.

A short email about the space, your timeline and the format you have in mind is enough to begin. We reply within 24 hours and confirm scope and pricing in writing before any work starts.
